Decopatch is a playful adaptation of the French word decoupage, or decouper, meaning to cut out. It is the creative art of assembling, pasting and varnishing paper cut outs to decorate objects, from simple designs to more complex works of art.  Decopatch is is a rapidly growing craft trend that is incredibly popular in France but it is relatively new to the UK craft industry.

Typically, a small box or an item of furniture is covered and transformed or refurbished. Each layer is sealed with varnishes (often multiple coats) until the "stuck on" appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work.

Decopatch papers produce a smooth texture and a real paint effect as the paper is deep-dyed and glazed. It will not break apart when glued, and the colors will never fade or run.  It is an easy hand-craft that is simple to learn.  If you want to try before you buy, why not come along to our Decopatch Training Days.

Decopatch also manufacture a great assortment of paper mache shapes including:  3D letters, animals (in small, medium, large and extra large sizes), moneyboxes/piggybanks, flat shapes, photograph frames, baskets, dishes, trays, boxes, trinket boxes and Christmas decorations.  They also supply glues, varnishes and brushes plus, for embellishing finished items, there are also dimensional paints and jewels.

Country Love Crafts can supply Decopatch to businesses and are one of the UK's largest wholesalers.  We have developed a number of Decopatch business starter kit options with varying budgets for business owners.

It is an easy activity which can be enjoyed by all age groups and requires few materials.  The finished result is a brightly coloured item with a strong surface, smooth texture and a wonderful paint effect.  Safe for children and water resistant. Reuse, recycle, upcycle, or revamp old items or simply personalise new ones!

See how simple it is .....

  1. Tear up Decopatch paper into small pieces.  Leave the pieces close by, top side up.
  2. Brush the object with Decopatch glue and whilst wet, pick up a piece of ripped paper with your wet brush.  Place the paper on the wet glue.
  3. Working from the centre of the ripped paper, do outward brush strokes to stick/flatten paper and remove creases.
  4. Topcoat the paper with more glue whilst fixing in place.  Use smaller pieces of paper around edges to minimise creases.
  5. Once dry decorate, varnish or accessorise.
